Shankland banner makers have been working with communities, trade unions, schools and individuals throughout the UK for over 40 years. In the late 80’s after years of activism and employment as a community artist, Lotte Shankland turned the upstairs room of the family home in Durham into a banner making studio. She was joined in the 90’s by husband Hugh who left behind a career in Italian literature to rekindle his passion for paint, people and illustration. Together they created Durham Bannermakers. On returning to England from Canada in 2010 their daughter Emma and professional artist and husband Edgar Ameti, took over painting in the banner studio. Pushing the reach and possibilities of the unique tradition they continue creating hand painted banners to fly amidst the crowds with messages of solidarity, hope, community organisation and change.
